Irish Moss has so many nutrients that it was used as “survival food” as far back as the well-known Irish Potato Famine of 1846 – 1848. It was strongly associated as a food that helps with hardship that has never been forgotten for many years to come. It is very well known in the Caribbeans and used in many different ways. Fortunately, because of Irish Moss’s many health benefits, it has never had a shameful past. Traditionally used as a cold remedy, the use of Irish Moss for respiratory ailments is recorded in Ireland way back in 1810. Irish Moss was also used widely in the treatment of tuberculosis and pneumonia.

• Remove from package and soak 1 cup of Irish Moss in a bowl of water for 20 minutes to let all the sand and debris float to the bottom of the bowl. Remove the Irish moss by picking it up out of the bowl and placing it in a strainer. Rinse well to get any extra sand or debris off.
• Used along with Isinglass, Gum Arabic, and Linseed to make a refreshing drink.
